Uncle Polar Spanish
How Uncle Polar Spanish works

What Uncle Polar Spanish is for.

Group classes, a good teacher, Spanish TV, chatting with friends: Uncle Polar is a firm believer in all of them.

The thing is, they work best once you have something to bring to them. Without the words and the tenses, a conversation is hard work: you can't say what you mean and you can't follow the reply. Just talking until it finally sticks is slower than people think. Given enough time, they say, monkeys would type the complete works of Shakespeare. That isn't the fastest way to learn Spanish.

There is a body of knowledge you simply have to acquire. Once it's yours, it opens a magic door: you get far more out of every class, every conversation and every episode. Uncle Polar Spanish is here to get that job done as quickly, efficiently and painlessly as possible.

In the end, it comes down to memory

The aim is to move the words and the tenses into your long-term memory, so they're there the moment you need them, without having to think. For that we use spaced repetition, the method polyglots swear by. Get a card wrong and you see it again within minutes. Get it right and the gap grows: if the last one was a month, the next might be two.

Once you can answer straight away after two months away, Uncle Polar likes to think the word is yours for good.

What we do

  • Words and tenses, drilled into your long-term memory.
  • Set expressions, colloquial phrases and idioms. Drop in one that people in Spain think of as their own, say it perfectly and people notice.
  • The subjunctive, one of the great mysteries of Spanish for English speakers. It is mostly memory too: learn the rules and triggers well enough and they apply themselves.
  • The choices that make the biggest difference: ser or estar, por or para and the past tenses you need to tell a story.

What we leave to others

  • A complete grammar course. We explain a little grammar, but for now study it properly elsewhere. It won't be as much fun and it won't be with Uncle Polar. Not yet, anyway.
  • All the conversation practice you need. Speaking with Uncle Polar is a great start, but real people still matter.
  • The spirit of a group class and the care of a good teacher. Nothing replaces them. You'll just get far more out of them.

That's Uncle Polar Spanish. We really hope you enjoy it.

How each part works

Powerful techniques. A clear path.

Guided and structured, so you master the building blocks of Spanish much faster than you ever would on your own.

1 · Vocab

A clever memory system for the words that matter

Behind the scenes, Vocab runs a spaced repetition algorithm, the same idea top language learners and medical students swear by. Each time a word comes up you say how well you knew it: Wrong, Hard, Good or Easy. Words you find easy come back after days, then weeks, then months. Words you struggle with come back within minutes. Every word turns up just before you'd forget it, which is exactly when remembering it does the most good.

You start with the 500 most used words and add a new group of 500 whenever you're ready, working your way towards all 5,000. Long before you get there, you'll understand 80 percent or more of the words in the Spanish you hear and read. Twenty to thirty minutes a day is the sweet spot.

Say your answer out loud and get a pronunciation score before you check it. Nouns are coloured by gender, so el and la stick without trying. Word families show how one word leads to the next. Any card can carry your own memory hook. And when you want to, switch to extra practice and go the other way, Spanish to English, without disturbing your main training.

The fast track to sounding fluent

Building your own sentences takes time. Phrases are the shortcut to sounding polished and more like a native speaker: ready-made things people really say, kept up your sleeve for the moment you need them. Drop in a well-timed “¡Qué va!” and watch a Spanish speaker's face light up.

300 phrases for everyday situations, from bars and shops to the doctor and making plans, 101 set expressions such as sin embargo and echar de menos, 40 colloquial phrases the way people in Spain really talk, plus nearly 2,000 sentences recorded by a native speaker from Spain. The same clever memory system as Vocab brings them back at the right time, and you hear each one as you check it.

Off on a trip, starting a new job or meeting the in-laws? Pick a survival pack and study just the phrases you need first. Anything you pick up along the way can become your own card too.

3 · Pronunciation: Sounds

Nail the five vowels and you instantly sound more Spanish

Spanish has just five vowel sounds: short, pure and always the same. Get them right and everything else falls into place. The sound trainer takes you vowel by vowel: a clear tip and English words to find each sound, then real words said by a native speaker from Spain. Loop them: listen, say it and hear the two of you back to back, a few rounds at a time, until it sounds right. Then come the eight consonant sounds that give learners away, from the rolled rr to the soft d, and every go gets a pronunciation score.

Try this now

Say the Spanish yo. Don't think yohw, think yaw: short and pure, with no slide at the end. Lo is almost law. That glide is what gives an English accent away.

alike the a in hat
elike the e in met
ilike see, short and crisp
olike the o in hot
ulike food, short, lips rounded

3 · Pronunciation: Reading

Read it, hear it, sound like it

Pick a short story, tap a sentence or drag across any words, and a natural Spanish voice reads them to you. Record yourself reading the same words and hear the voice then you, back to back. The differences jump out at once: a vowel too long, a stress in the wrong place, a word run together.

Then loop it. Voice, beep, your turn, again, until the rhythm and melody of Spanish feel natural in your own mouth. Every recording gets a pronunciation score. Tap any word to see what it means and add it to your Vocab with the sentence you met it in.

Three levels take you from your first sentences to confident reading, then Real Spain brings you San Fermín, tapas and the truth about the siesta. A story in five chapters then opens a new chapter with every belt you earn.

Understand real Spanish at real speed

Knowing the words is one thing. Catching them when a native speaker says them at full speed is another. Dictation plays a real sentence and you type what you hear, then see word by word what you caught and what you missed. The speed ladder plays one sentence slower, then faster, until normal speed feels easy.

Minimal pairs teach your ear the sounds that change a word, like pero and perro. And the accents tab puts Spain and Mexico side by side, so you know what to expect wherever you go.

Order tapas in Madrid, check into a hotel, see the doctor or meet your partner's family. Uncle Polar plays the other person: hold the button, say your line out loud and he answers in natural Spanish at your level, with a gentle correction when you slip. Uncle Polar is an AI, so you can practise as often as you like without feeling shy.

6 · Verb Trainer

Verbs made easy and fun, tense by tense

Spanish verbs look scary: dozens of endings and irregular forms everywhere. The secret is structure. The Verb Trainer takes you one tense at a time, in the order that makes most sense. Start with the present and practise it on its own for a few minutes a day. When it feels easy, add the next tense, practise that on its own for a while, then mix the two.

Each step is small, so it never feels like a slog. Quick rounds, a streak to beat and every answer checked at once make it feel like a game. Very quickly you're comfortable with the different forms and know when to use each one, and the mystery is gone.

7 · Subjunctive

The subjunctive, finally made simple

The subjunctive is the part of Spanish that makes most learners give up. It doesn't have to be. It has never been easier to finally get to grips with this key part of the language. Short lessons explain each rule in plain English, with real examples you can hear: wishes, feelings, doubts and things that haven't happened yet. Then quick cards drill each pattern until it comes without thinking.

Four stages take you from your first “¡Ojalá!” to “si tuviera tiempo”, with memory tricks like WEIRDO and DISHES along the way. Soon you'll hear it everywhere and use it without a second thought.

8 · Which One?

Ser or estar? Por or para? Get them right every time.

These small choices catch out beginners, advanced learners and even native speakers. When is it es and when is it está? Why por here and para there? Which past tense tells the story and which sets the scene? Get them wrong and people still understand you, but you never quite sound right. Get them right and your Spanish suddenly sounds natural.

Mastering them is one of the biggest steps you can take, so Which One? gives them a part of their own. Three short courses give you a simple rule for each, with real examples you can hear, then quick cards bring them back until the right choice is automatic.

Look it up, hear it, say it

Search the 5,000 words in Spanish or English. Type a verb the way you heard it, like tengo or fuimos, and it finds the verb and tells you which form it is. Spot the traps, then translate freely

Nearly half the 5,000 words are virtually the same as their English equivalent: información, hospital, posible. That's a huge head start. But some words look familiar and mean something else entirely. Embarazada isn't embarrassed, it's pregnant. Actual means current, and if you're constipado you've simply got a cold.

Learn to tell these false friends apart and you gain the confidence to translate all the others freely, without second-guessing every word. It's another key step on the express train to fluent Spanish.

Say it the Spanish way

Every language has sayings that make no sense word for word. In Spanish, something expensive doesn't cost an arm and a leg, it costs an eye from your face: cuesta un ojo de la cara. Someone who speaks their mind has no hairs on their tongue: no tiene pelos en la lengua. Using them is what makes you sound like a local.

You see the English and say the Spanish idiom out loud, then check it with a natural voice and the word for word translation, which often makes it impossible to forget. The most common come first, so the ones you hear every day are yours early on. Want to understand them too? Switch to extra practice and go from Spanish to English.

These idioms come from Spain. Many are used in Mexico too, so check with a Mexican friend before you use one.
